The track at the last UCI BMX SX in Chula Vista scared me of and some good racing at the last National race in Erp, the Netherlands… About 3 weeks ago we had the last UCI BMX Supercross (World Cup) race in Chula Vista, USA. I rode that track 2 years ago during a training camp. Nothing changed, but during practice before this race I got scared. Normally when I ride my bike I decide how to ride every jump on the track… In Chula Vista I couldn’t really control my bike the way want to, because some jumps had a weird kick of, especially on the third straight!

This time I had to do time-trials because I was ranked top 16. Somehow I pulled of a decent lap and got 10th place in TT. Normally I wouldn’t be satisfied with this result, but considering my fear for this track I was happy.
The next day racing was on. In the 1/8 finales I had some nice battles with my teammate
Twan v Gendt and
Tre Whyte from Great Britain. My start and first straight felt strong, but I was to thoughtful riding the rest of the track.

I made it easily to the quarterfinal. My start was great, unfortunately I came up short at the second jump and lost my top speed. I rode in 6th position and wasn’t able to pass anyone because I was to thoughtful… I can tell you I never raced with this kind of feeling before, but on this level it’s mentally damn hard to do what you have to do when you are scared! Congratulations to the podium finishers.
We flew back home on Monday, had an easy training week and raced the last National race at my home track in Erp. Unfortunately I don’t really ride this track very often, because I’m training at Papendal fulltime. It’s nice technical track and all my teammates and other Dutch riders showed up at the race. We all had some nice battles going on in the heat races and semi final. I felt really tired all day, probably from my jetlag coming back from the US. We had a strong final. After a bad start I was back in 8th position, but I made some aggressive moves and got 5th after a close finish with
Joris Harmsen who got 4th. I was disappointed, but I did the best I could.

The 2014 season is over. Not the results I was looking for, but I’m happy to end this season without any injuries besides my lower back. The team and I have 3 weeks off before we start preparing ourselves for 2015. I like to make some X-rays or scans to see how my wrist and lower back is doing at this point. From there my doctor, physiotherapist, trainers and I will see what I can do to get ready for next season.
