Willoughby headlines strong Aussie contingent to compete in America

World Champion BMX sensation and Olympic silver medallist Sam Willoughby headlines a healthy Australian contingent set to take on the best in America, and indeed many of the best riders from across the world, at this weekend’s USA BMX Grand Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Willoughby enters the final round of the series leading the National ranking in the men’s AA pro division from duel Olympic gold medallist and good friend Maris Strombergs as the two battle it out for the number one plate. Willoughby is on the cusp of achieving a rarefied feat in US BMX by becoming the third man in history to win four number 1 pro cups, and just the second man in history to win three in a row. The national ranking is determined by a rider’s best six national scores, plus their Grand National result.
Australia is the second largest BMX nation in the world, so it comes of no surprise that such a strong Australian contingent will be competing in Tulsa amongst 2,000 entrants, all vying for the six-foot
trophy and the final shot at a National Age Group (NAG) or National ranking, in what is the largest BMX race anywhere in the world.
BMX Australia President Barry Knight spoke of the important role that USA BMX plays in the development of elite and upcoming Australian riders, before wishing them all the best as they prepare to take to the track in what is the last event of the year. “I speak for all the board and staff members of BMX Australia when I wish our athletes the very best at the Grand Nationals,” Knight said. “BMX USA plays an integral role in providing experience to our developing riders, as well as providing a competitive environment for our elite riders to improve and excel. Ultimately the US series and Grand Nationals in particular, are an integral part of BMX on the world stage.”
Racing will be held at the River Spirit Expo Centre in Tulsa, Oklahoma over four days from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 November.
