When you make it to the National BMX racing Team having a dialled bike comes with the position. You've earned it by that point but you're also stuck with what your team decides which parts to run. The program needs to be financed and running certain parts from certain companies is the answer. But, usually these are the better brands anyway. For 2014 Laura Smulders was running a Meybo frame with Box components and Tioga tires, built up by National BMX Team mechanic Willy Meyer

who happens to run the Meybo brand out of Boekel, Netherlands. Laura's bike is set up exacty the way she wants it. She runs the right geometry, the right sized cranks, she's got her custom gearing and the perfect width tires. And when she needs to do a recovery ride after the races, the team mechanic makes sure she's got a large seatpost in the orange bike.

For 2015 things will change for Laura as she's no longer with the National BMX team but will race for team TVE which, as far as we know, will ride on FreeAgent bikes. The 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist will be one to watch regardless.
