Rio Olympic hopefuls Max Cairns and Lauren Reynolds have taken out the elite Oceania titles as torrential rain forced officials to cut short competition at the Subaru BMX National Championships at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Brisbane tonight. Racing under lights and tumbling rain on a soaked track, former prolific junior Cairns and 2012 Olympian Reynolds were declared the continental title winners, following the decision to abandon racing after the second of three motos and before any finals action.
Cairns clocked the quickest men’s elite time in the second moto to snare the biggest win of his senior career, edging out fellow Rio aspirants Bodi Turner and Josh Callan. Reynolds grabbed the women’s victory ahead of world number one Caroline Buchanan and rising star Rachel Jones.
Earlier in the night, with an eye on the future, world men’s elite champion Sam Willoughby, out of contention for the national series crown, withdrew from competition without starting a race,
unwilling to risk injury in the challenging conditions.
The Oceania Championship also doubled as the final round of the nine-event National Series with results from the series yet to be declared.
The elite riders now turn their focus to the coveted national titles up for grabs on Saturday, but not before hundreds of Challenge class riders take to the track on Friday in the respective age group national championship events.
