What parts do you change most often?
Daniel Franks: I change out the tires and grips most often. They are the 2 parts that get worn the quickest. There is nothing like holding onto a fresh grip and hooking through turns on fresh tires.
Who are some of the people who hook you up with parts when you need them?
Daniel Franks: At the moment I am dealing with the SpeedCo brand manager, Derek Betcher. As a dude who is a competitive pro, he really understands what the needs of a racer are. He (with the backing of Kirk at J&R) is always working hard behind the scenes to make sure the team is kitted out with the best frames, parts and clothes.
Do you care about the looks of your bike?
Daniel Franks: Yeah for sure. Everytime I swing my leg over the bike it just makes me so pumped to go ride. How can you not with a bike looking this good?! And of course it looks good in photos so that is helping out my Instagram game!
Does she have to be clean at all times before you hit the track?
Daniel Franks: I really do make an effort to keep her clean from week to week. It really only deserves to be clean at all times, especially being a majority black carbon frame. Don’t want all her best features covered up by dust!
What tire pressure do you run?
Daniel Franks: Usually around 90PSI for training and 100-110 for racing.
When it gets technical, who helps out with your bike?
Daniel Franks: We have a NZ team mechanic (Ollie Harnett) who is usually on the road with us at all World Cups. He makes sure that everybody has their bikes in racing shape. The Velox is always running butter smooth after Ollie has finished with her.
Any special reason for the colour combination of your bike?
Daniel Franks: Yellow is a hard colour to be able to do right, but I think SpeedCo have nailed it. It is a really nice tone that looks really good. Photos just don’t do it justice! It also makes the bike pop so it can be spotted getting sideways around the track.
Does weight matter much to you?
Daniel Franks: I am not too worried about weight of the bike. I am going to chose durability over weight any day as I really want a bike I can depend on. But with the SpeedCo frame being the lightest frame on the market I get the best of both worlds!
Thanks to: Huge thank you to my parents for always supporting my dream. My girlfriend for being with me every step of the way. Derek Betcher, Kirk Morrison, and the SpeedCo team for giving me the opportunity this year to represent the raddest company in BMX. And Brooke Crain for allowing me to live, train and race in the US for this year!
