The StoppelCross season has started. The first race was going to be in Handel. The Aarle-Rixtel locals met up at Paul's place at 08:15am. We waited for Lippe to come over from Germany but he either got lost (again) or never got out of bed as he didn't pick up the phone when I tried to call.
7 riders left in 5 vehicles. Harm "CR 23" Vogels and Edward "Texas Ranger" Schippers in the front, followed by Bart "Shift" de Hoon in the company Caddy and the three vans of myself, Paul's Ford van and Bern Buster's Benz. Rob Nouwens scored a ride with Bern. 20 minutes later and we had arrived. It was going to be the first race ever for Harm, Edward and Bart de Hoon, all of them riding 250cc Honda's.
Registration was a mess but it was soon forgotten as we put the gear on and got some practice laps in on the cornfield track. 4 jumps in total. 2 rather easy 4 feet high jumps, one stupid dangerous kicker on a fast straight and a perfect backflip jump for the FMX-ers. The roped off track was fast and in good condition.
With 62 entries the 125cc hobby class was split in two series (odd and even numbers). Rob Nouwens and myself were in the same qualifying group. I put my brand spanking new Millville tire to good use at the start and got out of the first turn in 5th (from 34). Rob had to play catch up as he was the only rider to crash. With 16 riders qualifying for the main event, Rob came 2 place short. He had moved up from 34th to 18th and showed what he got in the B-final by taking the holeshot and finishing 3rd. I managed to qualify for the main event in 7th but the final was a different story. After a rather messed up start (too much power in that SX) I was in 12th position when I got off the track and tried to get back on. I wanted to ride through the plastic rope but it was tougher than I thought. I ripped out a pole and made it back on the track only to spin around 360 degrees and crash right in front of a big crowd. It was so funny. If someone has that on film I'm sure it will end up on one of those "Funny homevideo" programs one day. I got back on track and was catching up but got off the track once more to finish 27th. Oh well, had my fun.
With 4 Aarle-Rixtel aces in the 250cc hobby class it was going to be an exciting race. Harm (#23) was the only rider in the odd# group but failed to qualify. Armpump was the reason. De Hoon (#66), Schippers (#30) and Paul de Jong (#2) were battling in group 2. Paul was riding very well and managed to finish in front of all his competitors/friends finishing 23rd. With 22 riders going to the A-final, Paul had first pick in the B-final lining up at the starting gate. De Hoon got stuck in a first straight pile-up in the B-final. He got back on his fast Honda to finish last anyway, just one place behind "second to last" finisher Harm Vogels. Edward Schippers disappeared from the starters list so what place he got was a mystery. Paul ended up in 15th.
Bas de Bever scored a nice 6th place in the A-final of the 250cc hobby class with a bad wrist. Other BMX-ers in this class were Wilfred v.d. Haterd, Jurgen Meyer and Ivo v.d. Putten.
Fastest Ale Local for sure is Bern "Bern Buster" van Rixtel. He rides the licensed class and showed his 2005 YZ is a potent machine. 6th in moto one and 5th in moto two means he was the only local to go home with a trophy. Paul's Boutique employee/trainee Jan Willem Koppenens (15 years old) finished 13th on his 125cc KTM. Winner of this main class was Gert-Jam van Doorn. It has been a while since he was 15 years old.
Some scratches here and there on the bikes and bodies was all the damage for our posse. Not bad considering throwing 3 rookies on a track for the first time together with 40 other mad men. The smiles on the faces was all that mattered. SX round two coming up this Sunday.
