Jovink's Zwarte Cross Festival - ook veur blanken
Jovink en de Voederbietels are a Dutch rock band with a good sense of humour. They're MX fans and started a race called "De Zwarte Cross" (The Black cross) 8 years ago. The event has grown over the years and attracts more people than any Motocross GP or Motocross of Nations. 55.000 people showed up over the weekend to drink, drink, watch a carnavalesk MX race and uh drink. On Sunday they had to tell visitors who were stuck in the traffic jam to turn around as the MX track in Halle had reached max capacity. Imagine that, telling people to go home because the motocross track is full.
Paul, Carry and I finally had the chance to check out the event. When we arrived the beer smell was coming towards us. The camping hosted 7000 people and they were waking up as we walked through the entrance. The place had a couple of beer tents and a full on fair going on. As we walked to the track the first heat of the "Gay class" had already started. If you enter the race you need to dress up. You can imagine what kind of suits showed up in the Gay class. One rider who did not get it got a beer shower from the crowd every time he passed them in his regular Motocross gear. It's not about winning at the Zwarte Cross and he found out the hard way.
Next class up was the "Taliban class". We saw the Twin Towers followed by planes, Ali Chemicali with a barrel on his back and more self destructing creatures. People were doing donuts during the race and were giving the crowd sand sprays for the heck of it.
Up next was the old school twin shock class with Bennie Jolink riding the BSA, followed by the licensed class which had MX GP rider Marc de Reuver dressed up in a pink bunny suit with fake tits hanging out and a pin-up poster taped on his back. Marc spent most of the time waving at the crowd doing donuts. Both of them loved it. Wyatt Avis got the crowd ready for spectacular jumps.
With 25.000 drunk people looking for any kind of action the vibe was good. The Special Vehicle class was plain ridiculous. Sidehacks with naked girls in it, huge trikes, planes, mini bikes, big cows, too hard to explain. The moped class was fun and the "star class" had Adam Currie loop out on his back and taken off the track on a stretcher. You hear this stuff and you think "what the hell!?" and you won't understand until you see it yourself. It's a big mess but everyone is smiling and having fun. It's only 10 Euro to get in so save up for next year's edition. Date: 15-16-17 July 2005.
