After a couple of turns looking out for either a guy who looks like a skater or a BMX-er, we saw a sign that sent us back to Hendaye in a way we had not used. The third option turned out to be the right one. Next to the train station, near a bridge we spotted some fresh new concrete.
The park in Irun is new, only a few months old and is pretty much split in two parts; the street plaza, and the transition/bowl part. Because the place had some puddles, we opted for the safe street part First and cruised around for a bit. The concrete turn was great and I can only imagine a BMX track with turns like that. I’m actually not a fan of asphalt BMX turns (where has the MX in BMX gone?) but a downhill concrete track with bowled turns would be something else…
The street plaza had the usual ledges, flatbanks and hips but in the middle was a good sized quarterpipe that some people would be interested in hitting (hard!). Before we could taste the transition part it started to rain, which sucked because it looked like a lot of fun. We’ll let the photos do the talking there but it had a bump, hips, pool coping, even blue tiles and a sweet 180 turn. Next time, next time..
If you’re looking for the park, ask for the Irun train station, near the River, just across the border from Hendaye (the beach side). You can park across the street and have fun all day long. It’s public, open to bikes, and free to session.
