How many places do you know that have concrete parks at the beach? How difficult can it be to have more spots like these? It’s the perfect location. Who doesn’t want to go to the beach? Durban’s concrete park was closed for a year because of the World Cup that came into town last year. Half of the park was taken down to create space for whatever they needed it for. Probably some drinking terrases for the Orange squad as Holland played in Durban a few times and was based there. But the park is back open and has a new section on the North side with a quarter to bank, a roller to half bowl and a sloped flat section to get speed for the rest of the park.
The view to the Indian Ocean is superb. Palm trees, clean beach sand, clear water with waves, the whole nine yards. Every now and then a shark sighting will disturb the swimming pleasure but that doesn’s happen all too often. How cool is it to go ride the park, then go for a swim, dry up, and continue riding.

The park gets crowded during the weekends, Holidays and when schools are out. You’ll need to avoid the kids on their scooters, mountain bikes, roller skates and whatever other toys are popular near the beach. They use it as a race circuit, slide or anything else they can think of. They’re kids, they play, just deal with it. As the sun goes down the park will clear up and riding gets a lot better. More space and no beating sun on your head. The place has

got lights too so the session can continue. Nothing’s perfect though as the moist and the sand from the beach can make things slippery. Found that out myself.
On Sunday 10 April a rad session took place with the riders of the Durban area and a few friends.
Stu and Coling Louden were there together with
Schalk, Mark, Dave, and out of towners
Greg Illingworth and
AT. The camera came out and we started shooting away resulting in a fair amount of pics that you can find in this article. We’re saving the killer shots for some future FATBMX ads so keep an eye out for those.
Next to Marseille, Bondi Beach and Durban it’s time for more concrete parks at the beach. BMX Beach Bums unite!
