After years of living in Hamburg and doing Mutation clothing with Christophe Huber, Marcin Stypulkowski moved to Warsaw and started KINGKONGBMX. Read more about the reasons why and what he has planned with his new brand.
What was the reason to give up on Mutation?
The reason was that Christoph and me had some differences. To continue our personal progression we had to finish Mutation so we split in good condition. I think we both needed a timeout of work to concentrate on ourselves.
Where do you live now?
In Warsaw, Poland
What made you decide to move down there?
This timeout I used to travel a lot. One of my trips went to Warsaw, Poland where I met my lady at a party. She is my fiancé and made me move to Warsaw, Poland. I am polish, can speak the language and thought this is a good opportunity to live somewhere else.
Now I am becoming a father and am really happy about it. It is a natural progression to become a father and taking care of your family.
What's the plan with KingKong BMX?
I wanted to do a new company which is making safety gear and clothing with a new style. The style should be unique. In all creative processes - climate, name and logo I’ve worked together with my Polish friend, a very creative designer, Maciek Obuchowicz. The atmosphere of King Kong BMX is an aggro-funk style. Funny and funky on one hand and aggressive and determined on the other hand.
Do you have good sources to have your clothing made in Poland or do you work with manufacturers from other countries?
Yes, I produce clothes, stickers, catalogues and some other things here in Poland. The quality is good for a very reasonable price. The pads are made in China which helps me to distribute King Kong BMX easier overseas.
How big is the Polish BMX freestyle scene?
There are less riders in Poland than in Germany. Fact is that only half as many people live in Poland compared to Germany. The scene here is very united. Riders from other cities are always having contact and they are organising jams and contests regularly or they are going somewhere else to ride together for a weekend. There are big talents here and they kick ass even though the parks are weak.
Is KingKong paying your bills or do you have a side-job?
King Kong BMX is in the beginning and the first product launch is right now. I am investing in King Kong BMX now and it should pay off very soon.
How important is it for you to have a BMX related job?
Riding is one of the most fun and satisfying things for me and it only makes sense to combine BMX with work. I’ve had a bmx related job all the time and I want to continue in this direction.
Do you do everything yourself at King Kong?
No, I do not do everything at King Kong BMX by myself. I am responsible for the product development, team, marketing, international sales and some graphics. To have excellent designs, graphics and a good website, I am working with designers here in Poland. They are very talented, I am always impressed of their work. Thanks to my distributors (Sport Import, Soulcycle, Kickass, JYKK and Sunshine) I do not have to take care of the sales in their countries and can concentrate on my fields.
What products can we expect from King Kong BMX in the next few months?
After the first product launch (kneepad, glove, shin pad, t-shirt and caps) which should be available now there will be a signature glove from Markus Wilke, a bigger clothing line, like the Kong jeans, zip-hoodeds, more t-shirt designs and accessories and an elbow pad.
Thanks for the interview Marcin, any last words?
I want to thank God for everything, Magda the mother of my baby, my family, Brainshop U-Boot for their support, Bugstudio.com.pl , FatBMX for this interview, my team riders, my distributors, my homies in Hamburg and Warsaw, and everyone who is supporting KingKongBMX.com.
