added style to it as well. An impressive Vince Byron was rocking and qualified in first place with more tricks than most. Not one run the same, but bangers in every one of them. Morgan Wade and Austin Coleman were the other two riders to transfer to the final group of 5.
Jason Phelan, Ben Snowden, Anthony Napolitan, Simon Tabron and Kevin Robinson made up group number two. Simon Tabron had a hard time dealing with the wind but it was still interesting to see him adapt to the Mini Mega. As a vert rider he did some sweet airs on the huge quarterpipe but lacked on variations over the gap. Jason Phelan was the opposite and fired out superman seatgrabs, no handers and double whips over the gap to air 4-5 feet out of the enormous quarter. He had fun, and that’s what counted. Riders were helping each other out which shows the true spirit of BMX. Ben Snowden had solid tricks over the gap and solid tricks on the quarter but needed bangers to make it through to the top 5. 360 turndowns, tailwhips, superman seatgrab Indian airs and 360 X-ups were not enough unfortunately. Transfering out of this group were Anthony Napolitan and Kevin Robinson, two riders who do have some experience on the Mega Ramp. They had to go back a little on this Mini Mega but had it down more than the rest of the heat.
The final 20 minute jam was wild. Out of the 7 runs that each got in the time they had, only the two best runs counted. Anthony Napolitan showed a new trick over the gap, a turndown flip tailwhip. So first he does a turndown flip and then throws a tailwhip in there while he’s upside down too. Insane. He also did a no-handed tire grab frontie over the gap and a flip doublewhip. It’s a pity he couldn’t transfer this level to the quarterpipe otherwise he would be up there on the podium for certain. Morgan Wade’s best runs were his No-handed flip to double tailwhip on the quarterpipe, the first double whip he’s ever done on a quarterpipe. His barspin flip and double whip scored high as well. The bike flip he did over the gap was after the time was up. Hi tied for third place. But the tie breaker was in the favour of Austin Coleman who scared the hell out of everyone more than once with is rolling down the window cat jumps on the quarterpipe. Damn son! But he stuck 3 runs which included flipwhips and zakflips over de gap and double downside whips on the quarter. It was his second medal at the Kia X-Games so yes he was stoked on that.
Kevin Robinson is always a contender when things are starting to go big. The bigger the better for the HB rider. He rode clean and I don’t think I saw him crash once. His switch hander 360 to opposite no-handed flair was pretty damn awesome. When is the last time you saw someone do a switch hander 540 on a giant QP? Saw one today and K-Rob did it. When Kevin shot off the ramp he simply rode through the wooden fence so I am not sure what can stop this guy next time.
Maybe it’s Vince Byron who can stop Kevin from winning. In this Mini Mega comp he did. The Aussie was riding unbelievably good. He was the only rider to 720 the gap, the only rider to Henwhip the gap (truckdriver to tailwhip), the only rider to dec8 the distance, and did 3 double whips and 360 toboggans over the gap too. He mixed it up over the gap but it didn’t stop there. As a vert rider he’s got the skills to tackle a giant quarterpipe. Here’s the list in case you want to know:
-No-handed 540
-Barspin 540
-540 whip
-No-hander to invert -Flair.
Vince scored a total of 95 points and a “gold medal” in China. Although some riders scared the heck out of me at some point everyone walked away. Some with some burn marks on their skin but all “in one piece”. Time to pack up and head back home. Asian X thank you.
