The Asian riders in his group didn't take the effort to go straight into a last trick this early but after fixing a flat, Matt finished off with a fence attack and started off qualifying on Sunday..
The 8 remaining qualifying groups were run real quickly. The forecast was for rain to come in at 2pm. Riding qualifying and finals in one day is a bit much to ask for but it needed to be done. It wasn't an easy ride either to make the top 16 cut. If you wanted a spot in the finals, you had to throw down. Although having great runs, Brian Hunt, Colin Mackay, Allan Cooke and Pete Radivo missed the cut. Kiattichai Wanitsakum (better known as Tee) was the first Asian rider in the standings. He finished in 22nd with tricks like 360-tailwhips over the spine, 270 turndowns over the hip, a huge superman tailwhip, wallride to tailwhip out, flair, a double tailwhip, handplant 180 over the spine, a tailwhip tiretap to barspin, and a 720 attempt. Look at that trick list! It sure wasn't easy to qualify.
The following riders made it: Daniel Dhers, Josh Harrington, Chris Doyle, Ryan Nyquist, Gary Young, Ryan Guettler, Morgan Wade, Dave Osato, Tobias Wicke, Kym Grosser, Rob Darden, Dave Dillewaard, Clint Millar, Anthony Napolitan, Alistair Whitton, and Corey Bohan. Josh Harrington crashed hard on his last trick (an icepick on the fence to barspin-in) and messed up his shoulder. He had to sit out the finals and Rob Wise, who qualified in 17th, moved up a spot.
There were more injuries in Singapore. Maybe it was the heat, or maybe it was the pressure to show some good tricks to make it to the next round. Bas Keep spent some days in the hospital after he got his handlebars in his stomach. They feared he had to lose his spleen but the latest news is that the bleeding stopped so he doesn't have to go under the knife in Singapore. Dave Mirra was out with a hurt ankle. He was bummed but simply unable to ride. Wade Lajlar hurt his thumb and had to sit out the comp, Allan Cooke missed his lever on a huge fence ride and fell straight to his hip (on the coping). No fun. Diogo Canina couldn't finish his runs after a crash on the huge curved wall. Corey Martinez hurt himself during the first hours of practice and also missed the Singapore Metro comp. Anthony Napolitan could hardly ride the finals. He fought the pain but was far from fit.
The old Bicycle Stunt saying said: "If you can walk away from the contest, you didn't try hard enough" It looked a lot like that at Metro.
