Mark Vos is one of the New Breed Riders of Zeeland, The Netherlands. He asked me to not blow up this interview so I'll stop here.
Hometown, age, years you've been riding, sponsors, give it to us baby!
At the moment I live in 's-Gravenpolder, a small village, the most exiting street obstacle is a 2-stair, and a flat-rail. that’s where I grew up.
I'm 20 years old, almost 21. I’ve been doing wheelies since I was 10 years, but the real bmx thing came trough at age 14. So that’s over six years already. And when ED my all-time riding buddy, had his first car we were going to other places and all of a sudden we saw skateparks, other street, and it evolved from there.
Regarding sponsors,
Oxbow gives me free clothes, and Soulcycle gives me free Orchid shoes. Though I consider you guys Bart and Paul to be homies too, cause Paul hooked me up on Vans and Eastpak before I was getting flow from Orchid. My friends sponsor me I guess. Half of my bike I got it from friends.
Who do you ride with on a regular basis?
THE NBR CREW, the beach boys, the homies hahaaa, Vladdie, Colin, Tom, Rolf and Pieter. I wish I could say: Daniel, Barry, Rutger, Randy, Dwayne, Mario, Aars, Casper, Caine and all those crazy dudes but I promise we will ride more together when I move to Scheveningen.
Where do you usually ride?
Mostly street, Scheldeplein in Vlissingen, street in Goes, ride miniramp now and then. Zeeland is where we always go. We plan a little street trip and search for new rails. Lately we've been going to more spots to ride. Scheveningen because it’s hot, and some park sessions of course.
What's the best thing about street riding?
The really best thing for me is when you see a perfect hardcore steep long set of stairs
...and there is just ONE way to get down there. It’s by sliding out the handrail in the middle. That gives me boost for miles. But I just love to cruise around on banks.. I also just love to be outside. Fresh air, sound of the freewheel...just good times. It’s just easier for me to scare myself on street, I like that... when riding park, I am just always holding back., don’t know why, I just suck in park
Do you like contests?
Yes, it’s great man, all those super gooood and down to earth pro's is super cool. Man, I tell you haha Estonia was the shittttt., and the homemadejam was also great..
Never forget Van Homan wanted to measure his hands with mine.. Because I have big hands haha. yeah contests are fun I think. but don’t worry about the result you know. JAMS are the best. That’s for sure, no money involved but bbq, good times, friends and pushing the limits of your own crazy bmx mind. Lately a lot of money is going on in the contest scene. Maybe it’s going to push the riding to a better level, but
I prefer letting good times and the vibe push me instead of money. On the other hand, it’s great to win money, cause bmx’ers are lowlifes :)
What contests do you plan on entering this year?
XL series, set up by Barry and Dwayne!!! the homemadejam also. Don’t know what else, depends on if I have money to go. Never been to the worlds. Would love to go there one day.
What's more important to you, doing a good run, feel good and finish 9th or doing a bad run and still getting 4th place?
I just need to smile, and I would not like it, when they give you more than you deserve.
I don’t even know why I have to be interviewed, I am just another dude and sometimes I even loop out on a manual hahaa. Always going for the good feeling, the good fun. and not so much for the first place. The best thing ever was at the FAT-JAM…. Michael van der Lee and I both cleared the same height on the high air contest...so good. Paul made two trophies, don’t have to be number one.. just enjoy the super good times you have with your friends. We are the lucky ones. So many people will never be able to do what they love so enjoy it and let love rule
What's the riding situation with your Sundays?
I believe in God, and I think it’s really good to take a day off.. to just sit back and think and be not worried about normal life. The way I grew up, made me see Sunday as a really different day and I was never riding on a Sunday. Don’t know exactly about that, I just do what feels good for me. Maybe I’ll be cruising around on a Sunday but it’s really good to take just one day, and in my opion thank God for life, and for your friends and for just being able to live life with a smile.
What's up with the New Breed Riders?
MAN. THOSE GUYS ARE MY HOMIES. Vladdie (website master, and killer video editor, king manual), Colin (shoots all those wicked pictures), Tom (he fixes all the bike parts, made himself a stem and seat post, more stuff on the way), Rolf (built up half the Meker skatepark), Pieter (king of minisoccer, always in for pancake party), Enssan (lives in Rotterdam with Saskia, homies for always. Ed (we miss you so much since you quit riding, I grew up riding with ed), Marky van de Velde (our all time chill out friend always in for a party) and MarkFox haha that’s me, and I do nothing. Maybe care for the fire at the bbq's or dive off of something.
What can I say about my closest friends. I have been riding with them for such a long time.
We had a bbq last summer. 35 hours straight. I mean, we are homies for life. Come and hang out with us, we have so many good stories. The one night we ordered pizza at the mini beach, new-year party's. Just super good guys. Am proud to say those are my friends.
You're moving to Scheveningen, what's the plan when you arrive?
Ride the hips, am gonna grind all over the city and drink coffee with Rutger and Geeske. These two lovers are so sweet haha, they made the phone calls so I can have an apartment in Scheveningen. I was riding street one day there, and I loved it so much. I said to Rutger Pauw: “I wanna live here. The very next day he called me.. right I found something for you, I just agreed right away. My housemates are all surf dudes,(Charly and Emile special thanks) so am going to hangout with them of course. The NBR crew will show up at my door to ride some more street haha. I already put my marks on the bed in the room, put a terribleone sticker on it.
Do you have any advise to the people out there?
Let’s ride in the early morning, swim and surf in the afternoon, and ride in the evening, have bbq in the night, all summer long.
Thanks to my friends, and LOES my love!!!!! peace Markfox
