Barry Kohne is one of those riders who lives BMX. Besides being one of the talents that Holland has to offer, Barry works in a bike shop, started organizing contests and is working on a clothing company. Being a BMX-er also means taking risks. Barry is currently out with a messed up ankle. We asked him some questions for an article on FATBMX.
How's your ankle and what happened exactly?
My ankle is getting better. Despite the fact I have to chill and can’t ride for the coming 4 to 6 weeks. I have got a cast now so I'm kind of immobile and that sucks! It happened at the first round of the XLseries in Heerlen....the first contest I organized. I did this handplant transfer from quarter to quarter, but it didn't work out that good. I slid out and twisted my ankle resulting in a broken calve and some torn ligaments.
How was it to organize the contest in Heerlen?
It was pretty cool actually. I didn't do it by myself though. I am organizing it together with a good friend of mine: Dwayne Verkade. He had to do most of the organizing in Heerlen since I had to go to the hospital. But I think the contest went pretty good, a lot of people showed up and I think everyone had a good time.
What other events do you have planned?
Because we are doing a series there will be two more contests. The next one will be in Skatepark Insaen in Zaandam and the final round will be in Rotterdam, Skateland. These are the two parks where a lot of riders who live in the 'randstad' ride, so I think we are gonna have some fun. And besides the events I have started a clothing brand together with Dwayne it's called Prospect. Working on that a lot too. Website should be online within a month or so. This is it for now, but I'm still working on other ideas so we will see. :)
What made you decide to organize contests in Holland?
I think it is something that has been on my mind for a while. It just felt like nothing was going on anymore in Holland. Cause the scene is really good, everyone knows each other, we used to hook up every weekend and ride. Like 10 to 20 people would show up and we were having a blast! But that spirit is gone, for a great deal that is. There are a couple of jams every year, but it isn't the same like 2 years ago. And it's good to have jams and contests, cause it is really motivating to ride with people and see how they progressed and how everyone is having fun! That is basically what made me decide to do these series.....
You're on the Braun demo team, how did that come to life?
Yeah man, I'm so stoked on that shit! I got a call from them and asked me if I would like to come and ride in this big-ass spine mini. Cause they are gonna do this tour and they need a team. Of course I went and when I arrived there, they had this beast of a mini, you have to see it. After riding the mini and shooting some footage I heard I was selected for the team. Crazy....looking forward to this tour…
What demos/contests are you planning on going to this year?
I am gonna go to a lot of places this year. Of course all or most of the stops of the Braun Cruzertour and I'm planning to go to the XLseries final, Highway to Hill, The Worlds, the BMXmasters, KOC, and I will be going on a RedBull trip as well. It's gonna be a good summer!!
What do you learn when you're on the road traveling?
So much! I have learned a lot about myself, my friends, about life, about other cultures...everything! It’s always great to go on another trip to a place where you have been or never have been. You just hop in the car call some friends and you're off. Only thinking about what will happen when you arrive. And be blown away by everything that’s different and all the new spots to ride, it’s great!
Who do you ride with?
I usually ride on my own. I always go to my local park and see who is there. Most of the time I ride there with the local kids or by myself cause I always get at the skatepark half an hour for closing... There aren't too many riders in Amsterdam. Sometimes I go to Rotterdam to ride with riders from the Zuid-Holland posse: Dwayne, Casper, Randy, Mario.... During weekends I always try to hook up with people. Then I usually ride with Randy, Mark, Bas, or Souf. It depends...
Where do you ride?
Most of the time I ride in Skatepark Insaen, Zaandam. It's an indoor park about a 15 minute drive from my house. It's a nice park where you have to be creative to find your lines. I like it. But if I'm fed up with my local park and really want to floor it, I go to Skateland, Rotterdam. In this park we can ride on the inline course. It's all transitioned and you can just ride around and flow over the course.
What do you spend time on when you're not riding?
I like to party…so when I'm not riding, most of the time you can find me in a bar or club in Amsterdam at night. Besides that I like to play Tekken with my friends or play some Poker or pool and lose some money...
