On Saturday I skipped a day of BMX. I hung out at the pool and enjoyed the ever good weather in California. Dad left for the Vans park in Orange to help out and the plan was to go to the OC County fair at night to see the ASA vert contest. The Vans comp was rocking it looked like when I checked the photos. I'll pass update 10 to dad. Here's his report about the Vans x Cult AM contest.
It's hard to find amateur contests in the States. The Recon tour does a good job at it but America is a big country so covering it all is rough. Vans teamed up with Cult to have an amateur contest at their park in Orange. It was an open qualifier for the Vans US Open, a big invite only event that takes place in HB the first weekend of the month August. Now for all sponsored riders that did not get an invite, the street comp at the Vans park was the only way in. Winning became a big deal.
The turnout was very decent. Three classes were held with the 13 and under class, the 14+ class and the Sponsored class. The
comp started at 14:30hr in the afternoon. With qualifying and finals on the program for the day it became a challenge to finish up the comp in time.
Ryan Guettler was in control on the microphone and
Dakota Roche, Trey Jones and
Codey Levesque were brought in to judge the comp. The under 13 riders all made finals. In fact they rode a straight final and each received a prize package from Cult and Vans. The winner (
Demetri Syrengelas) even got a complete bike! Not bad for an afternoon of riding at the Vans park.
The 14+ class had 6 groups of 5 riders. 10 riders would make it to the final. Each rider got 45 seconds to show what they got which was followed by a 2 minute jam session in qualifying and a 3 minute jam session in the finals. Watching 5 riders at once during those jam sessions was kind of tough but the judges had a good view from the balcony and caught it all.
Erik Carillo in the tie-die shirt won the comp in front of
Andrew Casarez who is actually 13, but decided to ride in the 14+ class. This is freestyle, so anything goes. Getting second in this big group is very promising for the 13 year old Cult rider.
James Carillo also received a parts package for 3rd place in the 14+ class.
But the only ticket for the Vans US Open was available in the sponsored class. As soon as the sponsored riders dropped in the level was turned up a few notches. Qualifying was awesome and the finals got even better.
Dylan Stark wanted that open spot badly and did two of the biggest transfers ever done at the park on a BMX bike. In the finals he crashed a few times so it wasn't going to be a clear win for him.
Kordel Caro was rocking.
His riding was more focused on street riding instead of doing flairs and tailwhips and he pulled some amazing combo's.
Grant Germain is a well known name in the BMX scene as well. His solid riding scored him an average of 92 points which was good for the last available podium spot. Kordel scored a 93,33 for second and Dylan got the win with 94,33 points. Honorable mention goes out to 10 years old
Max Vu for shredding like there is no tomorrow. His dedication at this age in unheard of.
He wanted to get that ledge to rail grind done and he got it in the end (after time was up).
Am comps are important. We're glad we got to cover this one in California. Good luck to
Dylan Stark hanging with the boys at the Vans US Open. He came into the contest with a plan, and made it happen.
