Back in the day it was hard to communicate. Calling the USA cost you over 2 euros per minute, for a letter to make it to the USA and back you could count on a few weeks at least. Magazines arrived months after they were sent and those were the only way to view new tricks. You had to look at the photos and figure out yourself what the hell they were doing.

I tried to balance a sideglide on the spot. Little did we know that the guy in the photo was actually rolling. You had to be creative at the time and whenever there was a contest, every rider had something new to show. When video camera's became affordable for some people, it started to get better. You could actually view what was done and rewind the trick to make sure you got it right. For the longest time the American NTSC system messed us (Europeans) up. TV's and video recorders could only handle the PAL system until a few years after that when both the TV and VCR could play both. That's when we could see what tricks the Americans were doing.
