It was great to see the familiar faces all in one place, buying each other drinks. Utrecht based band ‘the Padded Cell’ kicked off the night with a bang. Singer Marijn, BMX rider himself, put the pedal to the metal and went loose caboose. During the second song he was already rolling over the ground. This suits the Moora Cup perfectly, because it is not only known for bringing the scene together, but also for the random chaos going on.
This was displayed perfectly by one of the youngest riders present this night. The winner in the category broekie flatland, the categorie for beste newcomer in the flatland discipline, went to Erik Hogers. , He just walked into the venue the moment his name was announced by Marten Koster, after which he went straight for the podium, took the bottle of champagne from Marten and proceeded to spill the entire bottle over the crowd. From that moment on, that was the standard and after about three awards, champagne was raining from the ceiling above the podium. The most enthousiastic winner of the was without a doubt James Alberto. The flatland riding teacher from Tilburg, by now known as the godfather of Dutch flatland, was so excited he couldn’t hide it and jumped onto the stage with an enormous smile when he heard that he had won the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’. The competition in this category was fierce, with among others Dave to the Resque, winner of this category last year. Well deserved and with great pride James received this prize.
Big winner of this night was Mark Vos though. His dedication to BMX has brought Mark to Amsterdam, where doesn’t only frequent the pools, the streets and the Bitterzoet, but also shreds the newly built 020 trails. This resulted in him winning the two main prizes, for best streetrider and best dirtrider of the Moora Cup ’08. Prizes are not that important to Mark though, so he decided to close the night in a way that suits him best: hanging over the lectern he exclaimed that the entire Dutch BMX scene should go out and enjoy the summer, spend more time on your bike and, last but not least, have more BBQs in the sun. All this without wearing a shirt, of course!
After that, it was up to Amsterdam based band Union Town to finish the night off in a classic way: in chaos. With Jeroen Bouwmeester as ‘Head of Destruction’, the Winston turned into one giant moshpit, with people flying around all over the place.
See you all next year!
