THE BMX FREESTYLE WORLDS CHAMPIONSHIP IN PRAGUE
Prague central tennis court on Stvanice Island will host flying BMX riders instead of typical tennis balls
From June 1st till June 5th Prague will become the number one on the World extreme sport map. The Prague Stvanice Island hosts the World freestyle BMX Championship, the official title is Nokia BMX Freestyle Worlds 2005. Over 500 riders from all over the World will participate in. Freestyle BMX is a leisure BMX variation originated from bicross races and nowadays consists of 5 different disciplines: dirt, street, flatland, miniramp and vert. The race highlight is the contest in the 3.8 meter high vert, located directly on Stvanice central tennis court.
Marek Rejman, manager of organising GSMA agency says:
“Nokia BMX Freestyle Worlds is without any doubts the largest extreme sport event ever held in the Czech Republic or even in the Central Europe. Our goal is to present BMX in all beauty not only to BMX fans but also to general public as well and show that performances of extreme riders are not only interesting show, but an extraordinary sports experience, too. Besides 5 different contests divided in categories, we prepared great variety of accompanying programme. I believe that the young riders on twenty-inch bikes will not disappoint the spectators and will raise popularity of this discipline and extreme sports in the Czech Republic."
Dirt – this discipline is very close to the actual bicross, riders race on dirt jumps. Airs are much bigger than in bicross, style counts not seconds.
Street – Wooden obstacles and iron rails imitate the street surrounding. The rider must do as many tricks as possible within the time limit. Style, variety, difficulty and creativity count together.
Flatland – In this discipline there are no obstacles, the riders must pull their acrobatic tricks just on the bike accompanied by music.
Miniramp – There are two little ramps, connected with a spine allowing new variations and connecting tricks.
Vert – The royal discipline, the hardest one, the riders fly in a 3.8 meters high vert.
Even if it is an official BMX championship the event maintains the free and liberal spirit, so typical for freestyle disciplines. The riders will compete in three different categories: Pro – the highest only for the professionals, Masters – for advanced riders and Experts – for beginners. Girls on twenty-inch bikes will try to convince you that they can kick it too. The following stars promised to attend:
Jay Miron, Clint Millar, Kitaro Tanaka, John Heaton, Achim Kujawski, Simon Tabron, Joe Rich, Taj Mihelich, Dave Freimuth, Chris Mahoney, Antony Pill and the local star
Honza Valenta. Visitors can attend rich programme consisting of workshops, evening parties and many more surprises.
