Bohan becomes first to win back-to-back golds in BMX Freestyle Dirt
LOS ANGELES - Worst to first. It's certainly not the way any competitor wants to make their living. But sometimes you have to play the cards you are dealt.
So
Corey Bohan was sitting dead last after two of three runs in Saturday's BMX Freestyle Dirt final at X Games 11. The he flopped Royal Flush on his final run to become the first-ever to win back-to-back gold medals in the competition.
His winning run included a No-handed one-footer to a One-foot Flat 360 to Barspin to Toewhip to Opposite 3 and finished with a Front Flip.
"There was pressure this time around," said Bohan (Brisbane, Australia).
"The barspin to whip probably clinched it for me. I couldn't be happier."
If you're a betting person, put all of your money on
Chris Doyle next year. If he follows past form (bronze in 2002 and 03 followed by a silver last year and this year) it looks like a lock. He put down a Whip transfer to a Turndown 3 to a Whip on his third run for a score of 89.33.
"I felt it out and I think everything worked out okay for me," said Doyle (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Ryan Guettler (Beenleigh, Australia) earned his second bronze in Dirt the past three years with a strong second run that included a Turndown to Flat flip to 360 to Doublewhip.
The tough times for
Ryan Nyquist (Greenville, N.C.) continued on the dirt. Entering last year's event Nyquist had not finished worse than third in his previous seven X Games in the event. Last year he finished 8th and this year he fell even further into last. With a top first run score of 82.33.
