In Copenhagen the track looked better, faster, smoother than ever! The organisation did a very great job on the track, but also around the track with some big stands (just enough for all the BMX fans who showed up).
During practice at the Worlds track I had a really good feeling, because I felt strong. Sometimes it was hard to catch some landings on the second straight, because when we hit the Pro-Section on full speed, it was easy to overjump the 2nd and 3rd double. Anyway, that’s we’re you need to stay focussed and don’t want to go to fast… The only thing I was really struggling with was the timing when I was doing gates. The gate felt kind of slow to me and I couldn’t adapt myself, so I had to deal with it the whole weekend.
On a race track like Copenhagen, time-trials are always excited to watch, because it’s very close racing. Normally it’s just a qualification race, but now it was an official UCI World Championship title. I made one small mistake in my first run ending up 2nd. Top 16 men had to do a second lap to get a first time ever World Champ in time-trials. I knew where I could make up some time, but unfortunately I unclipped my pedal and lost some speed at the first straight. After that, I had a very clean lap but it wasn’t enough. I lost too much speed unclipping my pedal at the first straight. Ending up 4th was a big disappointment for me.
Racing on Saturday started okay for me by winning all my motos. Unfortunately my gates were not so good and that’s why it was game over for me in the quarterfinal. I hit the gate, so lost all my momentum and the other guys shut the door for me, so there was no place to go.
You can imagine I was even more disappointed than after my second time-trial! Sometimes everything goes automatically and sometimes not. It’s a real bummer getting 5th at the worlds last year and now going out in quarters… At least the crowd was behind, so that was a nice feeling! Like to say thanks to them and the organisation for putting on a great show.
Meanwhile I had a small vacation to relax a little, now it’s time to move forward and stay positive. In less than 2 weeks we have round 3 of the UCI BMX Supercross series at the Olympic track in London. I’m exciting and curious how everything will look one year before the Olympic Games.
