Okay, I wasn't expecting a reply from the only two Dutch BMX racers that are in the next round so quick. After Rob van den Wildenberg answered some questions, we also got a mail out of Beijing, China from fellow Dutch semi finalist Raymon van der Biezen. Both are going to get on that track this night again to try to make it to the finals. They have to race three times in the semi final and the four racers with the lowest score will make it to the finals.
Raymon was flying in the time trials and did well in the first two rounds of the quarter finals. In quarter final number three he crashed in the first turn while in the lead but got up quick enough to finish fifth which transfered him into the semis with 10 points. With the NOC providing wireless access in the Olympic village for their athletes, the answers to the questions came in quickly. Just moments away from the next round we caught up with Raymon.
Do you think it would have been an advantage for you to ride in the rain since you are from The Netherlands and it rains a lot here?
Raymon: Not in Beijing on the Olympic track I guess, because the whole track from start till finish will be slippery, so we can’t ride when it’s raining.
We you just unlucky to slide out in the first turn or were you taking it a little bit too far in your final quarter moto?
Raymon: We all know, the first turn is really short for the speed we have, especially when you start from the inside. I couldn’t brake enough in that short time, so I pushed it to the limit!
Nice seatgrab by the way in the second Time Trial run. Do you have any more show jumps that you want to do in your victory lap?
Raymon: Thanks, I just thought about that seatgrab, when I was in the air… That’s also the only show jump I have.
Do you feel that BMX is receiving a big push because of the Olympic race?
Raymon: Yes, for sure. All the media is great for the sport, also other athletes from other sports are here watching us.
Congrats on making the semi finals. You are looking good on that track. What's the next goal you have set for yourself?
Raymon: My goal is a medal, so I’m gonna do the best I can.
