Eight named to funded team for USA Cycling BMX World Cup in Pietermaritzburg

USA Cycling announced today the eight athletes it will send to the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup event in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa on August 21-22. The Pietermaritzburg Supercross is the second of four UCI BMX Supercross events in 2009 and will also serve as the first of 16 races that factor into the 2010 USA Cycling BMX Power Rankings for both the elite men and women categories. This is also the same venue that will host the 2010 UCI BMX World Championships on July 21-25, 2010. Four men – Nicholas Long (Lakeside, Calif.), David Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo.), and

Last weekend the Final Rounds of the European Championships Series and the European Challenge were held in Fredericia, Denmark. In the Championships Category, Rihards Veide and Edzus Treimanis were competing. Max Ganser had a bad crash in practice and could not race. Niklas Laustsen and Steven Wong were still in the UCI Centre in Aigle preparing for the Worlds.
Four Olympic medallist have today confirmed they will compete at next week’s BMX World Championships in Adelaide. Headlining the field is current world champion and Olympic gold medallist, Maris Strombergs from Latvia. Olympic silver medallist, Mike Day (USA) and bronze medallist, Donny Robinson (USA) also today confirmed and a part of a strong American contingent. According to UCI BMX Sports Co-ordinator, Johan Lindstrom, “Maris Strombergs is the man to beat! He has shown great consistency throughout the season and wants to keep that jersey for another year.” In the record books only a few riders have back-to-back wins at the World Championships, explained Lindstrom. However the USA, French and Dutch teams have strong riders that will put up a challenge for Maris.
The women’s podium is wide open with the recent withdrawal of two- time World Champion, Shanaze Reade (UK).

BMX Australia today announced BMX bike brand ABD has become a sponsor of the 2009 UCI BMX World Championships in Adelaide between 23 – 26 July. The NBL Stars n’ Stripes National in South Park, PA is a classic on the NBL circuit for good reason. It’s one of the most popular tracks in the USA and has a rich history of action dating back to the 70’s when BMX was in the formative years. This years National may have proved to be the turning point in the season for several title-hungry riders looking to be on the podium come September at the NBL Grand Nationals.
Results of the Elite men final after second place finisher Roy van den Berg got disqualified for giving Frank Heijne "an elbow" but this was a doubtful decision. Niels Verrijt got DQ-d because he took his helmet off before crossing the finish line. Sounds like a good old BMX race to me! The American Bicycle Association and the U.S. Olympic Training Center announce Permanent home for BMX Hall Of Fame

The ABA is proud to announce that the ABA BMX Hall of Fame has found a permanent home at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. The Olympic Training Center has set aside nearly 1000 sq. ft. inside the OTC Visitor Center to pay homage to BMX heroes from days gone by; the National BMX Hall of Fame will be one of the main attractions for over 300,000 annual visitors. OTC Director Tracy Lamb stated, “It is a great honor to have this collection housed at the Olympic Training Center and it’s very exciting to know that most of the items in the collection have never been on public display”. Tracy went on to add, “now with an Olympic replica BMX track for the Elite riders, an ABA sanctioned amateur track and now the BMX Hall of Fame and Museum Chula Vista will become a world renown BMX destination”. To commemorate this occasion and in conjunction with the UCI Supercross and US Open Amateur National, the San Diego Hall of Champions will host the 25th annual BMX Hall of Fame banquet
