With the Olympics just two short years away the interest in the world’s fastest growing action sport is rising. At the end of another successful season, the UCI BMX Supercross organisers take time to reflect and honour the special achievements within the BMX Supercross community. The awards were presented by Double A Pete during a lively and rather typical BMX party in Frejus. There were several prizes awarded with the majority of the awards being decided by a jury vote. The result for the most popular rider of the year award however was judged by the public, who casted votes through an online voting pole.

The finals of the BMX SUPERCROSS UCI World Cup took place at the tail end of Saturday afternoon in a highly-charged atmosphere. At the end of what was intolerable suspense, the Latvian Maris Stromberg, leader of the ranking, won this final event in style as well as snatching the world title. Finishing on 787 points, he dominated Australian Sam Willoughby (656) and American Fields Connor (586). However the Latvian, already a winner in Copenhagen, had to wait for the final to accept his crown.

Thankfully the announced clouds and rain stayed away in the South of France. It would have been bad to have great weather back home and rain where it's normally sunny. Racing went on all afternoon in a non stop program at the Roc d'Azur. The afterparty is coming up so I'm keeping this short for now. Here are the final results of the MEN  and WOMEN classes.

The French cyclist Laëtitia Le Corguillé, following a fall on the afternoon of Friday 8th October during the qualifiers for the final of the BMX Supercross UCI World Cup at the Roc d’Azur event (Fréjus), was hospitalised to undergo tests.

“Her condition is not worrying. She left hospital last night suffering from bruising to the ribs and a broken finger: forced rest is what is required for the sportswoman”, stated Fabrice Vettoretti, coach for the French BMX team.

Heading the world cup ranking with a 679 point lead over New Zealander Sarah Walker (397 pts), the French cyclist is guaranteed to win the title this year, even though she won’t be able to race in the competition during this final event of the BMX world cup.
