Why did you decide to have a custom frame made?
Pim: I was riding the Total BMX Voltron V2 and Killabee because I always liked a shorter rearend. The geometry wasn’t always the way I wanted it because since I’m pretty tall, I like a longer toptube than 21”. There always were some options to order a custom frame but I really liked Mike Laird’s work and mission statement. I really like that you can design your own seat stay bridge because it really makes it one of a kind. I don’t ride much anymore and I’d rather have a frame I really like now. It’s well worth the money and feels way better to buy a Lairdframe than any other frame on the market. It was € 480,- including shipping and I had to pay € 120,- for the import duties/tax, so it’s € 600,- for an American made one of a kind custom frame, so in my opinion it’s definitely not expensive at all!
Did you know exactly what sizes you wanted or did you have to look something up before you ordered it?
Pim: I kind of had the sizes in mind but I checked some geometries of frames I rode and based it on what I liked and didn’t like about them.
Long front end, short back-end and semi steep forks?
Pim: Yes, toptube 21.25”, rear end 13.4” and 75.25 degree headtube. Usually the longer the toptube, the longer the rear end will be but I’d rather have the rear end a bit shorter for flips and spins. A shorter rear end usually comes with a low standover height but I just sticked to 8.5” to keep it more stable. It has an 71 degree seattube and 11.66” BB height.
How long did it take between putting the order in and getting the frame in your hands?
Pim: It took 6,5 weeks from the day I’ve ordered the frame until it got delivered here in Eindhoven. It’s pretty fast!
Are you stoked on the result of the frame?
Pim: So stoked! Best frame I’ve ever had! I decided to get it clear coated because there’s no need to hide the welds with paint that isn’t see-through.
What makes it special for you?
Pim: Own geometry, own seat stay bridge and not riding some companies’ standard frame. No removable shit on it, everything welded because I know I’ll always ride a gyro.
Do you have any parts on your bike that you really wanted on your new bike?
Pim: I kind of had all other parts, just needed this frame. Got a new Fit fork in it because a chrome one looked better!
How long did it take to put it together?
Pim: It took 1,5-2 hours I think because I brought my two bikes to Paul’s Boutique and had to take the parts off first. Paul and I discussed what parts would look good on it. The rest of the time we just talk which slows down the process of building the bike haha!
More sessions at the park from now on? New motivation?
Pim: A new frame like this definitely motivates me to ride but got a lot of other things to do that usually have higher priority. I won’t promise it but I’ll try haha! Maybe I’ll roll it around a bit the BIKENIGHT tonight before this weekend’s BRAAAB contest at 040 BMX Park!
Thanks to: Big thanks to Paul de Jong for always helping me out with my bike, PURE BMX Distribution/Paul’s Boutique for delivering the extra parts and getting my bike build up in the workshop! Thanks Mike Laird for building this awesome frame! Check out his website www.lairdframe.com
