Picture of today is from the first issue of Action Now, an "extreme sports" magazine that had a mix of skateboarding, surfing, BMX, music and everything else extraordinary like "Fairing bikes". These "downhill road racers" as they called their vehicles, were basically 20" bikes with fiberglass fairings attached to it. Originator was Dan Hanebrink. Today's picture shows Kim Barker in his Griffs gear that at one point was also popular over in Europe.
Dean Bradley was the man who did the Bicycle part of the magazine. In one of his columns he writes:
Juicy rumors
Possibility of future bike bowlriding contests, formation of Downhill Road Racing Association, impending BMX mass media blitz and "eventual takeover." 
At FATBMX we've followed the BMX scene since the late seventies. Paul and I needed to get our hands on everything that had a BMX picture in it. More people were like that at the time but the difference is that we saved everything in an old box. Make that several boxes! Over the next couple of months we're going to dig in and show you some history. After doing a BMX 'zine for ten years (1987 - 1996) FATBMX made it on the internet. The year was 1998. Here to stay.
