Starting a BMX magazine isn't automatically a success story. The magazine has to be paid for. The printing costs money. Somebody needs to take pictures. A person needs to write the articles. The layout needs to be done. Shipping the magazines to shops, subscribers and the newsstands, it all costs money. It's not uncommon to see a magazine fade after the first issue. Pulling off one magazine is doable. You need to have a certain budget to make the issue that you think is going to sell. If it doesn't work out, your budget is gone but at least you gave it a shot.
BMX magazines rely heavily on BMX advertising. But how many magazines can a company support? There's DIG, Ride USA, Ride UK, RebelYell, 2020, FreedomBMX Soul, Cream, BMX Plus!, BMX World, The Industry, Sahtel, BMXer, BMX Today, Zwanzig Zoll. Next to print advertising the companies can choose for web advertising, video magazine advertising or a company can put their marketing dollars into all kind of other activities to promote their product.
It's not that I doubted Session's existence but to see issue two drop on the floor meant that they've pulled off the first step and found enough BMX support to continue. Ryan Guettler actually took the cover shot of Colin MacKay for issue two which also had the following articles:
-Dew Tour reports from Salt Lake City and Orlando
-A report on the Utah scene
-King Of New York contest report
-Stephen Murray Jam at Nasty's trails
-Fuzzy Hall interview
-2007 Interbike report
-Mexican X-Games report
-BFF Block Party
-Scrape the town
We know that issue three is in the works and we're looking forward to that one.
