an opportunity for riders who weren’t on form the day before to get themselves a spot in the last 16.
With only 4 places available it was do or die for those wanting to drop in for the finals. Making it were Sergio Layos with his signature Spanish style, solid riding got Daniel Penafiel through, Ondra Slez booked himself a ticket and Brazilian Diogo Canina’s flairs both ways across the channel made sure he was in with the rest of the card carrying members of the finals club.
With a combination of heat and the anticipation of 16 or the worlds best going head to head for €20,000 the crowd were fully frenzied up, but to get them frothing at the mouth riders stepped up for a best trick session. 3 riders fully owned the park for the duration eager to pocket the €1000 on offer. Ryan Nyquist spun bars to over peg stall on the metal wall, which is far more ridiculous than you could ever imagine. Alex Coleborn from the UK was giving everyone a headache with this technicality just missing the catch on a tailwhip to footjam whip to bars – notable trick none the less. Gary Young double peg grind on the metal wall, Mad Dog triple downside whip. Taking the cash money with, as far as anyone knew, a totally new combo was Michael Beran – work this out – bike flip to tire tap whip in, video game style.
The first heat of finals had Sergio throwing a huge 180 over the box and Diogo sticking all the big tricks both ways. If the 1st heat was running full throttle heat 2 saw it actually take off with an Alex Coleborn tail whip barrel roll and a triple whip, the last whip being super late. It was Ryan Nyquist that stole the show though, coming out blazing he attacked the course like slow was a crime and bagged up some of the best lines of the day, 720 bar spin, back flip bar spin and a truly feral 810 transfer from the volcano to the metal wall.
With the crowd fully amped the clouds that were looking threatening all day burst pretty much closing down the show. Although the best efforts of the organisers and time dried the ramps, by the time they became safely rideable everyone was too exhausted to finish the comp.
After a short floodlit demo the judges announced that the final results were going to be drawn from the previous day’s qualifying position meaning that Dennis Enarson was crowned Nike 6.0 BCN BMX PRO champ.
Working down the list that also means that Ben Wallace from the UK will get the invite to the prestigious HB BMX PRO held in Huntington Beach, California 5th – 8th August.
