At the 1994 World's in Cologne the Bro Hymn song by Epitaph got played over and over again. It became the song of the contest and until this day I think about Pro-mini with Miron and Bender on the spine whenever I hear that song.
Fast forward a few years and Pennywise are touring Europe with the Warped tour. John Peacy and Rick Thorne were doing shows as well and Rick totally hooked us up with free lunch, a round in the tour bus, some ice cold Nescafe coffee drinks and last but not least we all made it on the stage when Pennywise was playing.
We stood next to Ice "Mothafuckin'" T (not Icemoney) and when the '94 World's song came on we even walked to the front of the stage and did the OoooOoooOooooOooooooooooohh thing together with the band in front of thousands of spectators. It was a day to remember to say the least. Paul still has a picture of it hanging in his shop that was taken by someone in the crowd to prove it really happened.
It's been a week now and guess what, we were on stage with Pennywise again. This time at the Download festival at Donnington Park, UK that also hosted the Snickers Soul Bowl contest. Apparently Kevin Robinson is good friends with the band now and he totally hooked it up this time. We walked up the stage together with the band. BMX-ers who made it backstage were Jamie Bestwick, Koji Kraft, Steve Swope, Big Island, Stefan Geisler, Page Hussey, Large Ray(?), Paul and I. Fortunately I had my camera with me and also some spare batteries. I just started acting like this pro photographer and walked on stage during the set. Pennywise were the main act on Saturday and the festival tent was packed. At those moments I'm all like: "What the hell is going on here?"
Towards the end of the show Steve Caballero grabbed a guitar and started jamming with the band. When the Bro Hymn song came on Kevin Robinson was on the microphone, OBG was grabbing Fletcher to have his picture taken with him (it worked), Paul was hyping up the crowd and everyone else sang along with the OoooOoooOooOoohh song. Everyone was pumped after the show and thanks to Kevin for sorting this.
The BMX Freestyle world's are coming up next week. It's been ten years since Bro Hymn became the official World's song. I'm sure we'll hear it again and hopefully the vibe is right so everyone will sing along.

Song text:
To our best friend, Present past and beyond Even though you weren't with us too long Your life is the most precious thing we could lose While you were here fun was never ending Laugh a minute only the beginning Jason Matthew Thirsk, this one's for you Ever get the feeling you can't go on Just remember whose side it is that you're on You've got friends with you till the end If you're ever in a tough situation we'll be there with no hesitation brotherhoods our rule that cannot bend When you're feeling too close to the bottom you know who it is you can count on Someone will pick you up again we can conquer anything together all of us are bonded forever if you die I die that's the way it is.
