nostalgically styled three-minute video features today’s best BMX pros riding retro-looking bikes, complete with custom-built 80s wheels and designed by the world’s leading wheel manufacturer, Skyways. The original ‘BMX Bandits’ takes the form of a bank heist movie, featuring teenage BMX riders attempting to foil the criminals and was shot at some of Sydney’s most iconic locations that are recognisable even today.
Corey Bohan comments: “It's been 33 years since the film was released so I wanted to make a tribute to it, and recreate my favourite elements. This is purely about bringing a good laugh to the BMX industry, and making a tribute video to what I still think is a good BMX film. Plus it’s set in 1980s and I love the ’80s!”“I’d say the best part about filming in busy public spots was having people approach us and know exactly what film we were paying tribute to”, Bohan continues. “And working with the stuntmen and the pyrotechnic guy wrecking and blowing stuff up is always a good time. My favourite would be the construction scene - it had real-deal riding involved and all the trimmings, too - fire, wrecking cars and nose bonking construction workers!” Bohan continues.
Revered BMX personality Mike “Hucker” Clark was the perfect co-star for the clip, who himself seems a man sent forward in time from the ‘80s. With his fair skin, flaming locks and bike skills, he could easily be mistaken for Nicole Kidman - barring international fame and his pasty mustache. But Mike has done his celebrity female likeness proud, helping recreate the most memorable scenes in all their 1980s glory.
“To see how stoked Corey was on the idea made me want nothing more than to be a part of it”, Hucker says. “The actual filming only took a week, but it felt as if we were making a Hollywood production. We had crazy cameras, stunt men, a very strict schedule and many, many takes on the same clip. It felt like we were filming a real movie.”
“Riding the boardwalk in Manly was one of my favourite parts of filming. Tons of people knew about BMX Bandits and were stoked to see us all dressed up. Sharing our love for riding with others was a big part of it. It's not every day the locals of Manly get to see three riders from the 1980s do stunts on the boardwalk. It was awesome.”
