- There will be no BMX riding at this year's FREESTYLE.CH event in Zurich. The HSA-crew have been running a vert program at this event for years but this year the organization is doing a combination of snowboarding, street skating and FMX. That means a weekend off on 24-26 September, unless something else comes up. - Ben Townley's website shows pics of Tyla Rattray, Josh Coppins and BT himself riding BMX bikes at Joel Smets' BMX track. 2-stroke-Tyla is aboard a HARO, Josh Stole a bike because the decals say it was stolen and Ben Townley rides a Dragonfly. All three riders are in the top 3 of the MX GP world championship standings but still find time to have fun riding their BMX bikes. www.bentownleymx.com - 2300 BMX racers have registered for the upcoming UCI BMX race World Championships in Valkenswaard (23-25 July). If you're into BMX racing, this is the place to be that weekend. - Mark Fox is the unofficial Bunny Hop king in the Netherlands with 1,00 meter, he did it at a dirtcomp at Bergschenhoek same weekend as the Worlds in Cologne. Vladdie de Koning got second with 95 cm, Paul de Jong's winning Bunny Hop at the Dutch Championships in 1985 was 75 cm so he has to return at the FAT JAM Bunny Hop contest this year in August. - Domtown jam in Utrecht was a big succes, finally for the first time no rain and lots of people rode the pool and flatland course. The Contest was not so organised but funny as hell, Barry Kohne won with Daniel Wiz in second and Dennis Keunen in Third. - At Donnington Festival in England the Ex-Coach of the HDT was singing the Bro Hymn song with Pennywise and Steve Cabalero again and after the show he was seen putting an empty beercan in Steve-O's ass, believe it or not.... - Riding the new Sjappi Trails in Maarssenbroek (Fazantenkamp) was nice after a day in the concrete pool, but riding dirt will hurt too, Paul slipped of the pedals and Dennis ripped his arm open. Going home we dropped Mike at the hospital cause he crashed his shoulder on the Concrete pool and Dennis with bloody arm and Paul with a limping leg helped him out of the Van and got him to first aid, how funny is that! - FAT JAM 2004 will be awesome, date is set on August 21st and 22nd. Ryan says: "I would like to ask you all to cast your (BMX) vote for me by clicking on this link and clicking on my name and submitting your vote. I feel like I'm doing some kind of class election campaign... crazy. Anyways hopefully you can help me out with this. Here's the link: http://espn.go.com/espy2004/s/ 04maleactionsportsnominees.html Check it out and please take the time to vote and pass it along to anybody and everybody you know. It kind of sucks in the way that the person who wins isn't the most deserving but the one who gets the most people to go online and vote. Kind of a popularity vote. But I can play the game, but I need your help. Please vote for me. Thanks a lot." Ryan Nyquist - The Cobra 77 crew went racing at Rockford. More on the trip in the FATBMX racing section. - Vert riders Anthony Pill, Jerry Galley, Zach Shaw and Tim Eichert survived the Deconstruction tour. The music and halfpipe sk8/BMX tour is a rough one to survive as the athletes sleep in tour buses and do shows in different countries all over Europe. This combined with the rock and roll lifestyle has resulted in at least one person going to the mental hospital every year. Fortunately, it wasn't any of the BMX guys. - Simon Tabron needs people to ride with: "The ramp park in Newquay has been a bit quiet recently - weird when Mt. Hawke (possibly the worst park in the UK) is always busy just 10 miles away. I'm trying to spark some interest in the park and need a little help - Right now, the sun is shining and the park has a little of something for everyone. If any of you want to put on any bike events, stop here on tours/ roadtrips, amateur jams or just venture down for a weekend in Newquay, it would help. The real problem is that Newquay only has a permanent population of 20,000 and it's hard to sustain the costs of the park with so few people. We used to complain that we had no facilities and now that we do, it seems like no one can be bothered to use them. We have a really big and varied street/park course, a 40' wide vert ramp (that's not too big!) and a hipped mini set up." Look out for a "Spot Check" on the park on FATBMX next month. - Matt Miller over at DK sent in the following news: "I just got back from a filming trip for a System Cycle video. We took 10 DK and Flybikes riders on the road for 10 days. It was a blast. We hit Illinois and Michigan. Pic 058 shows Kevin Porter, Sergio Layos, Steve Quest, and Quinn Semling playing C-Lo (a dice game). I don’t know if BMX kids are playing that in Europe or not but it’s an epidemic here. I think that I’m going on a 3 month adventure with the DK team to do stunt shows at malls all over the US. I’m pretty psyched about that. The tour starts in 3 weeks. 3 months without stepping into my cubicle. I can’t wait." - The Braun Front Brake Revolution is a new BMX event tailored for the tech riders, organized by Ben Foakes. The focus of the event is pushing technical riding to new heights within a jam style, best trick contest format. 2004 will see the launch of the event, which we feel has been a long time coming. The event itself is being centered on media coverage rather than huge public crowds. DATES: 10/11/12th September 2004 LOCATIONS: “The Frontâ€? skatepark, Weymouth, UK. “The Trick Factoryâ€? a.k.a: “The Ridge Caveâ€?, Bridport, UK. - Check www.bmxzone.ru if you're interested in helping out Russian BMX Freestyle. Trans Am are still taking care of distribution and ordering the product but Bennett is working from 5 hours away. - Here's what Scotty Cranmer is about to get himself into....: ABC Family Reality TV - On Thursday he gets on a plane and switches lives with someone somewhere. He has no idea where until he gets to the airport. The person he switches with gets picked up at the airport by Scotty's parents and spends the next 3 days hanging out with Scotty's family and friends. He will be who knows where spending 3 days doing what this other person does on a normal day. All of this being followed around by a TV crew. Let's hope he is not milking a cow in Montana. Scotty normal life revolves around his bike riding. Going to his skate park, going to the local BMX track with his 6 year old brother or just wandering the streets looking for something to ride. Could be good or could be bad. - Scott Wirch, former pro BMX rider for Giant, GT and Redline, has signed a deal to ride for HARO Bikes. Scott will still be doing some BMX events but his main focus is to ride HARO's MTB bikes and that's the freeride/jumping/street kind of riding that has caught on. - The English football team should have replaced Beckham with these dudes. Sven had the chance to get the Forte's out on the field but made the wrong decision. - Vinnie Guedz is going to be spending loads of time in the USA as he is the official Little Devil/TransAm photographer. Vincent also has a new website out at the following URL: www.duvaldotcom.net - Warwick Stevenson (Australia) has signed on to enter the UCI BMX World Championships in Valkenswaard, Holland from 23-25 July. Now that the sport is an Olympic discipline, the general media is showing interest too. - According to Big Ed issue # 39 of DIG is out shortly. Dig's on a monthly schedule for the summer so you should find your copy in the mail when you return from your next road trip. - Eastern Bikes out of North Carolina are now also producing Fitness machines. According to former vert pro Jon Byers, the Poweride Cycle that they designed is selling well and by the end of the year a full line of fitness equipment will be available. BMX-ers don't need to worry. Eastern Bikes will remain producing BMX bikes and components, the fitness department is run under a separate company. - Tip Plus, one of the main BMX distributors in the USA, have signed a deal with Lotek shoes to become their sole distributor. Lotek founder Rich Hirsch is still responsible for all the design, ads and team management but Tip will take care of distribution and sales. It can only add to the success of the BMX shoe company. - Here's a little news from France. The 3 days contest in Marseille was awesome (the riding level, spectators , weather.......). Eastern's Pascal Guerard finished 3rd at the bowl pro contest just behind Gary Young (1st) and Jay Miron (2nd). Pascal did a perfect and very high 720° on the concrete spine. That kid is no joke but Gary Young grabbed the win away from his boss at MacNeil (Jay Miron) who can be considered a local at the Marseille park by now as he visits it every year. I'm sure they celebrated with a steak sandwich down the road. - Riders are taking control over the BMX sport more often. Next contest promoters are the KGB-clan of Viki Gomez and Martti Kuoppa. Their first BMX flatland jam is called: Flat Styles and will take place at "Red" in Helsinki, Finland.
