We also received FAT-JAM T-shirts today so make sure you pick up some BMX history when you get over here tomorrow. Yup it has rained a bit today but if you know the Sugar Hills, you know they can take some rain. They looked great this morning when we placed the Killer Jump (wooden take-off built by Dennis, Riccardo, Pim & Michael) in front of the giant landing. We can see big things happening on that set-up tomorrow. Also we will have some fun stuff going on. Distance jumping (kicker ramp to flat) where you have to land on your front wheel first. First place: Snafu fork. The SNAFU 8.6 is becoming a tradition at the FAT-JAM so down that 8.6 and set the fastest time. RedBull is coming over with the DJ booth, Eastpak is bringing the BBQ so it should be a good time. Weather forecast? Sun of course, like you're used to at the FAT-JAM. At night Dan Dryers will rock at OJA so don't miss out on that. If the sun still has some power left on Sunday we'll be going lake jumping at the first big bridge in Helmond (if you're coming from Aarle-Rixtel). We'll decide on this when we wake up on Sunday. FAT-JAM 2008, you gotta be there.
-Freecaster.tv have got a page online with clips and TV highlights from the X-Games. It has Dave Mirra's ride to Bronze in the Rally race, all BMX disciplines, FMX etc. Worth checking out if you live outside of the USA as they did not get the rights to show the clips in America.
-The Collins family has just gotten bigger. Congrats to Michael and his wife on their daughter.
-Congrats to Mark Noble and his lady on the birth of their third child (daughter this time). Mark picked up Mark Mulville to ride for Deluxe BMX.
-FATBMX booked flights to the Interbike show in Las Vegas to report on all 2009 products and party with the BMX family at the Nora Cup.
-Simon Tabron did not have a great 10th X-Games event. In prelims he crashed on a 900, knocked himself out for a few minutes, bruised some ribs and his shoulder and broke a hand and a finger. When the second group started the qualifying program Simon was already on top of the ramp. When Jamie Bestwick went down hard it was Simon who jumped in the ramp from the top with a drink in his hand to check on Jamie's status. Imagine that; being that hurt and beating everyone (inculding the paramedics) to the fallen rider. Brothers for sure. Jamie got up and ended winning gold for the UK.
-Michael Sommer sent in an extensive letter on the status of flatland riding that we will post next week.
-Donny Robinson and the Olympic USA BMX team met the Governator at the USA training facility in Chula Vista. We actually just watched the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics and spotted Robert de Wilde and Rob van den Wildenberg in the Dutch crew as they entered the stadium. Good luck to all of you guys.
-But there is more news than just tomorrow's FAT-JAM. Rob Darden for instance is back on HARO Bikes and has been riding great as of late. He even medaled at the X-Games which was a big surprise for most but it was well deserved. The Rockstar sponsorship money of the HARO team was well spent by getting Rob back on the program.
-The 30 years of BMX reunion at Slagharen planned for the first weekend of October has been postponed until some time in 2009.
-The ABA has a BMX Hall Of Fame going and the 2008 nominees have been announced. You can vote on these BMX icons from riders to industry people to people who have done good things for the sport. Read the info on the nominees to learn some more about these people and then hit VOTE.
-The RedBull Backyard Diggers have been working overtime. New trails were built in Veerle (B), Mechelen (B), Deventer (NL), Zoetermeer (NL) and soon in Doetinchem (NL). We're liking this project. The more dirt spots, the better.
-Diogo Canina had a great week. First he won the qualifier at the Big Air BMX Triples in Costa Mesa ($1000) and then won the finals too ($5000). He continued by winning silver at the X-Games and then had a good party (we think).
-One of my favorite issues of FAT-'zine is online now. I take this issue as my ticket into the BMX industry (on accident). I was actually hanging out with cover man Dave Voelker a lot last week which was great. He is just as rad as ever. Check issue #24 here. #25 will be up tomorrow and includes a Mat Hoffman interview and the party scene report from the 1992 World's in Budapest, Hungary.
-The SoulBowl BMX Legends jam in Huntington Beach was one to remember. Too bad Mike Dominguez, Eddie Fiola and Tony Murray were present but could/did not ride but the Lord (Dave Voelker) made up for all of them. Brian Blyther, Xavier Mendez and last but not least Ron Wilkerson were ripping it up as well. A week later 41 years old Dennis McCoy was spinning 900-s and doing flairs at the X-Games. When does it stop?
-Congrats to Michael de Wit, designer of the 2008 FAT-JAM T-shirt for his promotion over at Vans HQ in Cypress, CA.
-Did you see Tom Haugen's truck on fire?
-Are Hoffman Bikes products really tested in space? You better believe it.
-Mike White was the winner of the X-Games package that we gave out last week right before the X-Games. Congrats Mike, hope you had a good time at X14.
More next week.
