Best of Blaak unites the Dutch BMX scene at the West Blaak Skatepark

On Sunday July 19th, the West Blaak Skatepark in Rotterdam will be BMX only. During the fourth edition of the Best of Blaak contest the absolute crème de la crème of the Dutch BMX scene will go head to head. Channon Balorean, Rotterdam’s finest and winner of last years’ contest, is full of confidence. Rotterdam is proud to rock the title European city of youth during the year 2009 and the Best of Blaak event seamlessly fits in. Channon Balorean is happy with the support of the local council: ‘This way, the local council enables the level of riders to grow further. It also shows youth a great alternative to petty crime.’

One of the main issues of the West Blaak skatepark is the slipperiness of the course due to wax and dust. This time around, the local council is attacking this problem head on. The council has promised to clean the entire course 2 days in advance with a high pressure cleaner, to prevent it to be slippery at any time.

This is good news for Channon, but not necessary for him: ‘Because I’ve been coming here for about 5 years, it doesn’t really bother me that much. I still slip once in a while, so it is definitely helpful!’

The Rotterdam local is attending a home competition: ‘I’ve competed in all former editions and won last year. The years before, I was less lucky and got injured.’ This fits Channon, as he was formerly known as a ‘loose cannon’. Over the years, he has managed to clean up his act, dial in his backflip variatons and is now considered one of the best Dutch park riders. Apart from Channon, other riders to watch out for are Barry Kohne, Virgil Persat, Boy Jansen and Mark Vos. Channon nonetheless expects a lot from another Rotterdam and West Blaak local: ‘Mr Celso Rosario Da Luz is gonna blow up!’

With the ever notorious as hilarious MC Mischa FSO on the mic, DJ King Koen behind the decks and Rockstar and Soul Cycle as sponsors, the West Blaak skatepark will no doubt see an amazing array of tricks it has never seen before!
