Mike Laird Takes Home $10,000 After Fans Crown Him First Ever PlayStation® Trick of the Year Winner
October 16, 2005 - Orlando, Fla. - The Dew Action Sports Tour, the first-ever, season-long professional multi-sport tour in action sports, today announced the winner of the PlayStation® Trick of the Year Award. Voting ran the entire week of the PlayStation® Pro in Orlando, Fla. Fans were able to view video clips and vote online
at www.dewactionsportstour.com until Sunday, October 16. The result was announced live on NBC during Sunday's Dew Action Sports Tour broadcast.
Fans selected Mike Laird as the PlayStation® Trick of the Year winner. Laird was nominated for his Double Tailwhip 360 in BMX Park Finals at Denver's Right Guard Open. Over 40,000 votes were cast this week to determine whose trick was best.
Laird was up against tough competition for the PlayStation® Trick of the Year Award. Fellow BMX Park competitor Scotty Cranmer was nominated for a turn down front flip that he completed during Park Finals at the Panasonic Open in Louisville, Ky. BMX Dirt competitor Ryan Guettler was nominated for Trick of the Year twice, after winning two PlayStation® Trick of the Week contests. He was nominated, and won after Front Flips at August's Vans® Invitational in Portland, Ore., and the Toyota Challenge in San Jose last month. In the end, Laird's fans came out to support him by crowning him winner of the first ever PlayStation® Trick of the Year contest.
"I never thought I would win Trick of the Week, let along Trick of the Year," said Laird. "The fans are what all of this happen. If it wasn't for them, there would be no Dew Tour, there would be no contests. This award just shows that the sport is continuing to grow." Laird wins $10,000 as well as other PlayStation® prizes.
