USA Cycling announced today the process that will select the 2020 Olympic Team for the exciting discipline of BMX Racing, now in its fourth Olympic Games, and the new Olympic discipline of BMX Freestyle. The organization has published the Athlete Selection Criteria for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo for BMX Freestyle and Racing on its website. The USA Cycling Selection Committee set forth to create criteria that would not only select the best athletes, but was objective and easy for athletes and their coaches to understand.
The maximum quota of athletes for the BMX Freestyle discipline is two athletes per gender. Quota slots will be initially filled in order of their ranking in the USA Cycling Olympic BMX Freestyle Rankings as of May 12, 2020. Points towards an athlete’s rankings will be awarded for their best four finishes in UCI Freestyle World Cup events plus the 2019 World Championships between January 1, 2019 and May 12, 2020. Athletes must finish in the top 8 in these events to earn Olympic BMX Freestyle Ranking points.
The maximum quota of athletes for the BMX Racing discipline is three athletes per gender. Like BMX Freestyle, quota slots will be filled per gender by athletes in order of their ranking in the USA Cycling Olympic BMX Racing Rankings as of June 2, 2020. Points towards their rankings will be awarded based on their best ten finishes in the finals (top 8) at UCI BMX Racing World Cup events plus 2019 and 2020 World Championship events with a Maximum of twelve scores counting between January 1, 2019 and
The USA Cycling Board of Directors has named Rob DeMartini as president and chief executive officer of USA Cycling. DeMartini joins the organization from New Balance Athletics, Inc. where he spent the last 12 years as president and CEO. He will begin his new position in February 2019. “Our entire Board and management team enthusiastically welcome Rob as our new CEO. His passion and ambition for both the future of USA Cycling and our sport is inspiring. He also brings the proven leadership, commercial skills and resources to elevate USA Cycling and to do more for our members, partners and athletes,” said Bob Stapleton, USA Cycling Chairman of the Board.
During his time at New Balance, DeMartini accomplished one of the highest periods of growth in the athletic footwear and apparel industry, driving the company from $1.5 billion annual revenue in 2007 to $4.4 billion in 2018. He led the expansion of international sales and guided the brand as it regained its position as a leader in specialty running while also focusing on cultivating company culture.

USA Cycling announced today the 12 athletes that will represent the United States in Freestyle BMX at the 2018 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships taking place November 5-11, 2018 in Chengdu, China. Among the competitors is 2017 World Champion, Hannah Roberts for the women and Nick Bruce who is currently ranked first in the UCI standings on the men’s side.
“The USA Freestyle riders are excited to contend in the 2018 World Championships. All our riders will be ready to contest for those prestigious UCI medals and have a good start to the qualifying period for the 2020 Olympic Games,” said Jamie Staff, BMX & Sprint Track Performance Director.

USA Cycling is searching for a Manager to help promote the mission of the organization and support the BMX program. The BMX Program Team Manager will be the organizational leader of the program and responsible for the day-to-day operation of both the BMX Freestyle and BMX race programs including facilitation of training, competition program logistics, distribution of resources to athletes, selection procedures, junior development program strategy and execution, supervision and development of staff and contracted support team members, and administrative duties for the team. The position will work in close collaboration with many USA Cycling stakeholders including, but not limited to: USA Cycling Foundation (fundraising arm), USA Cycling’s sponsors and partners, the United States Olympic Committee, and the media. USA Cycling announced today the addition of seven athletes to the 2018 USA Cycling National Team across multiple disciplines: Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif.) in BMX Supercross; Luca Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Dakotah Norton (Davidson, Mich.) in Mountain Bike; and Katie Hall (Saratoga, Calif.), Alexis Ryan (Ventura, Calif.), Jonny Brown (Covington, Tenn.), and Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo.) in Road. Each rider joins the team based on top results this year that meet the objective performance-based criteria. “We are excited to be able to extend the benefits of the USA Cycling National Team to additional riders. Having more athletes qualify for support by meeting the challenging objective standards means that our depth as a nation is increasing,” said Scott Schnitzspahn Vice President of Elite Athletics for USA Cycling.

USA Cycling announced the launch of the USA Cycling National Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Fifty-one athletes across BMX, cyclocross, mountain bike, road, and track cycling were initially named to the 2018 USA Cycling National Team and identified as the top performing athletes in each discipline based on objective performance-based criteria. “USA Cycling has always developed America’s best cyclists and aided them in international success, but we have not had a formal National Team in nearly two decades,” stated CEO Derek Bouchard-Hall. “We are introducing the USA Cycling National Team now to help our Olympic and World Championship contenders achieve their absolute best, clarify for all elite athletes how to attain USA Cycling’s top level of support, and create a clear path and goals for developing athletes that aspire to Olympic and international success.”
USA Cycling today announced the creation of the U.S. Junior BMX Development Team. The team, which will serve as the premiere BMX development team in the United States, will focus on developing athletes who will be targeted to win medals at the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
USA Cycling and Director of BMX Jamie Staff have teamed up with Dale Holmes Racing to improve the development of young American riders. Both Staff and Holmes are passionate about youth development in the sport and hope their combined 60 years of experience will help to develop the United States’ next, great BMX athletes.
